Katy and her best friend Maile Mercer each spent half their senior year in Costa Rica attending Monteverde Friends School, with Katy there for the first semester and Maile there for the second.  At the end of Katy's second semester at Carolina Friends School, she went back to Monteverde to visit Maile and to produce a photo-essay on Costa Rica as part of her Independent Study class.
